When is Women’s History Month?
Curious about when Women’s History Month takes place? Well, it stretches throughout the entire month of March, from the first to the 31st. But here is a fun fact. It was not always this way.
What are the origins of Women’s History Month?
Did you know it all began in Santa Rosa, California, with just a week dedicated to celebrating women’s achievements? Back in 1978, a group of remarkable women there decided to organize a special week to coincide with International Women’s Day. The idea took off and spread to communities across the nation.
A few years later, the National Women’s History Project took the initiative to the national level. They successfully lobbied President Jimmy Carter in 1980, and voila—the first official National Women’s History Week was established.
President Reagan embraced the tradition, and then in 1987, Congress made it official by declaring the entire month of March as Women’s History Month with Public Law 100-9.
