This grassroots, unpermitted march began in 1994 as a defiant response to the more buttoned-up official Pride parade and has since become a cherished Pride Weekend tradition. Gather at Tompkins Square Park after dark on Pride Friday, and you will find a fabulously diverse crowd of drag queens, kings, and things – all are welcome, no corporate sponsors, no rules.

The march steps off at sundown, proceeding westward through the streets [often with an informal police escort stopping traffic] and eventually ends up in front of the historic Stonewall Inn. Along the way, you can expect humorous homemade signs, impromptu performances, lots of singing and chanting [the classic “God Save the Queens!” is a favorite], and an unmistakably punk vibe.
