The crawl is built for groups: multiple bars, included drinks, and the collective energy of several hundred people treating a Saturday in May as a proper occasion.

The Spectacle
Stone Street Cinco de Mayo Street Fest

The annual anchor of New York’s Cinco de Mayo calendar. Stone Street shuts its cobblestones to traffic, and the participating restaurants and bars set up tents selling margaritas, frozen drinks, tequila shots, Mexican beers, and food through the evening.
Mariachi bands, a high-energy crowd, and the specific atmosphere of a pedestrian-only historic street in lower Manhattan, given over entirely to the occasion. It is the spectacle version of Cinco de Mayo in New York. Loud, crowded, and worth experiencing at least once.

Arrive by 4 PM if you want to move freely. The Wall Street after-work wave arrives around 5:30 PM and the density shifts significantly. Children are welcome in the early hours—the organizers suggest before 3 PM. Food and drink are sold by the participating restaurants; there is no single entry ticket. The Brooklyn Option

Blackbird, inside the 42 Hotel on South 5th Street, is hosting a Cinco de Mayo evening with $5 margaritas and live music alongside its regular dinner service. Chef Jerry’s kitchen continues to serve the menu that built its following: oxtail mac and cheese, salmon and grits, sliders, lobster bisque.
The Cinco de Mayo additions bring energy without altering the room’s identity. In Williamsburg, this is a proper evening rather than a bar crawl.

The Considered Drink
Clover Club — Latin Spirits on Smith Street

Clover Club is the Carroll Gardens bar that has been doing this right since 2008. Co-owned by Julie Reiner, one of the city’s most respected bartenders, it runs a cocktail program that treats Latin spirits with the same seriousness it applies to everything else. On a Tuesday ostensibly about tequila, this is the address for a mezcal flight or a properly made margarita that does not arrive in a plastic cup.
The mezcal program, in particular, rewards attention: small-batch producers from Oaxaca whose craft is finally being afforded the consideration the city has always extended to Bordeaux. The room itself, with its pressed tin ceiling, deep booths, and long bar at the back, invites a slow evening. Jazz brunch runs every Sunday; the Tuesday version of this bar is quieter and better for it.

No specific Cinco de Mayo event, but this is the Smith Street answer for anyone who wants to celebrate with intention rather than volume. Open from 4 PM Tuesday. The frozen drinks program is worth noting; the cocktail menu is extensive enough to justify reading before you order.
The Culinary Occasion
Casa Enrique — Michelin-Starred Mexican, Long Island City

The first Mexican restaurant in New York City to earn a Michelin star. The clearest case the city makes for Mexican cuisine at the highest level. Chef Cosme Aguilar’s path to it is not direct: a car repair shop in Chiapas, the highest French kitchens in New York, then a return to his own heritage.
The Mole de Piaxtla, named for his mother’s hometown in Puebla, alongside cochinita pibil and chamorro de borrego. None of this is a holiday menu. It is what Aguilar serves every night, and what the city did not recognize at the level it deserved until 2014.
Long Island City is a short ride on the seven train from Midtown: close enough for a Tuesday evening, far enough that the crowd descending on Manhattan’s margarita bars will not follow. This is Cinco de Mayo as a culinary occasion rather than a bar event.

Reservations essential, particularly on Cinco de Mayo. Book directly through the Casa Enrique website. The seven train to Vernon Boulevard–Jackson Avenue is the cleanest route from Midtown: eight minutes from Times Square. This is the Queens entry on a list that is mostly Brooklyn and Manhattan.
