Stepping into Madam Mikette’s, you are immediately struck by the vibrant energy radiating through the space. When I arrived for dinner with my friend Pet, the crowd buzzed with lively conversations that spilled out onto the sidewalk. It felt as though everyone around me was part of the same Captivating encounter and the atmosphere hummed with a sense of joy and discovery.
At first, I did not realize it was Happy Hour. This collective energy made me wonder for a moment whether our reservation would still be honored amidst the rush. The host warmly greeted us, melting away our hesitation. We had arrived just as New Yorkers were unwinding from a long day—laughing, sipping cocktails, and shedding the weight of the city’s hustle.
There is something inexplicably enchanting about Madam Mikette’s. It has that rare ability to transport you to a different time and place while still feeling familiar. It was like walking into a scene from Midnight in Paris. Even before we crossed the threshold into the main dining room, the magic was already palpable.

The Inviting Atmosphere at Madam Mikette’s
Once inside, the space’s vintage charm draws you in, with a striking red velvet sofa set apart as though waiting for someone to peer into their future. Scattered around the dining room, bookshelves brim with well-loved books and charming trinkets, evoking the feel of an intimate, old-world salon. These small details—vintage picture frames, timeworn books, and whimsical objects—add layers of history, making the space feel like a hidden corner of the past brought to life, where every nook tells its own story.
All these elements combined to create a serene, cozy atmosphere, ideal for catching up over cocktails or indulging in a rich meal. I selected a table that offered a view of the entire room, capturing every detail of the space’s quirky yet chic ambiance.
The Perfect Blend of Nostalgia and Modern NYC
As a seasoned New York diner, it takes a lot to impress me, but Madam Mikette’s manages to do so effortlessly. It strikes an excellent balance between nostalgia and modernity. Offering a touch of Old World charm while embracing the eclectic flair of NYC’s dynamic restaurant scene. The dining room itself is a visual treat, reminiscent of a 1920s speakeasy, but with a contemporary twist that brings it into the modern age.
The real allure, however, lies in how Madam Mikette’s draws you in. From the attentive service to the intricacies of the décor, it feels like you have stumbled upon a well-kept secret that only a lucky few know about. It is a place that instantly turns a regular night out into something memorable.
The Inspiration Behind Madam Mikette’s
In April 1929, a woman named Mikette Cuba was fined $100 for the crime of illegal fortune-telling. Her misstep? Accepting a mere 25 cents from an undercover policewoman to catch a glimpse of the future. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, fortune-telling tea rooms were a major source of entertainment for working-class women across America, flourishing in cities like New York.
Madam Mikette’s pays homage to this colorful past, embracing the vintage glamour of the 1920s while nodding to the spirited fortune tellers who once brought mystery and intrigue to New York’s vibrant tea rooms.
A Parisian Bistro in Midtown Manhattan
The restaurant, located at 987 2nd Avenue, feels tucked away in the hustle and bustle of Midtown. From the outside, it might seem unassuming, but once you step through the doors, you are transported to a different era. The interiors, infused with vintage Parisian charm, exude an understated luxury.
After exploring a wide range of NYC restaurants, I find something particularly appealing about Madam Mikette’s. It is not just the food or cocktails but the sense of escapism it provides. This casual upscale NYC restaurant offers a refuge where the stresses of the outside world fade away, enveloping you in a cocoon of positive energy, exceptional service, and exquisite cuisine.

After graduating from the Institute of Culinary Education in New York, Chef Edwin Rivera had the opportunity to work in a series of acclaimed kitchens, from ABC Kitchen to Jean-Georges, and even Marea.
His rich experience across these renowned establishments has helped him develop a unique style that combines traditional European techniques with modern American flavors. Today, he leads the culinary vision at Madam Mikette’s and Wildflower, having most recently served as Executive Chef Partner at Claudette & Bobo in the West Village.
The Cocktail Menu at Madam Mikette’s: A Blend of Innovation and Comfort
The cocktail menu at Madam Mikette’s is nothing short of impressive, offering a diverse array of drinks. From timeless classics to inventive seasonal creations, every sip is designed to tantalize your taste buds and leave you eager to return for more. Whether you are after something familiar or ready to explore new flavor combinations, there is a drink here for everyone.
Some standout cocktails include the “Ask Me Another,” a tequila-based cocktail with pineapple and a spicy kick. And the “Marching On,” combines pisco, cinnamon, vanilla, and orange blossom water into a refreshingly sweet drink.
My Personal Favorites
As someone who loves trying different cocktails The “Strange Interlude” stole the show. A vodka cocktail artfully balancing creamy and tangy flavors, featuring raspberry thyme shrub, ginger, and egg white for a beautiful interplay of textures.
I was especially fond of the “Main Street,” with chamomile-infused cognac, spiced apple, and Angostura bitters, reminiscent of autumn cider, with a refined twist. Of the two, the “Strange Interlude” stood out as one of the best cocktails I have had in a while, with smooth, frothy texture and subtle tang creating an unforgettable experience.
Madam Mikette’s also boasts an extensive wine list, featuring selections from various regions. Whether you prefer a robust Cabernet Sauvignon or a lighter Pinot Noir, there is a bottle to enhance your meal, adding depth to the overall dining experience.
If you are someone like me, who appreciates a good glass of wine paired with an exquisite meal, their thoughtfully curated wine list adds an extra layer to the dining experience.
What We Ordered: An Evening of Culinary Delights
Beyond cocktails, the food at Madam Mikette’s is equally impressive. We indulged in the West Coast Oysters, which I topped with invigorating horseradish shavings and a hot sauce blend that enhanced their fresh brininess. They provided a savory bite-sized introduction to our evening.
Next up were the Spinach & Artichoke Dip, served with a rich four-cheese sauce and crispy tortilla chips, and the Crispy Calamari & Shrimp, accompanied by zucchini chips that provided a fun, crunchy contrast. The spinach and artichoke dip was creamy and indulgent, while the calamari and shrimp were fried to golden excellence—crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.
The Crispy Fish Tacos were another standout option. The tempura-battered hake was light and flaky, topped with a refreshing red cabbage slaw and a tangy poblano lime crema that brought everything together. It was the kind of dish that, despite being simple, hits all the right notes.
Entrees
For the entrees, I initially leaned towards the Grilled Faroe Island Salmon with Brussels sprout slaw and ginger lime vinaigrette. But, as I often do, I asked the server for a recommendation, and I am glad I did. He suggested the 14oz NY Strip, served with crispy fingerling potatoes, parmesan, and a red wine reduction.
The steak was tender, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. I also tried the Maine Lobster Pot Pie, which, while delicious, had a slight bitterness to the sauce that I could not quite place. Still, the lobster was succulent, and the puff pastry was buttery and flaky, making for a satisfying dish overall.
Desserts
To round off the meal on a sweet note, we indulged in two standout desserts that perfectly balanced richness and creativity. First up was Stella’s Bread Pudding, served with a vibrant blueberry basil compote and drizzled with housemade caramel sauce. The warm, custardy bread pudding was comfort food at its finest, elevated by the tangy and herbal notes of the compote and the decadent sweetness of the caramel.
Next, we savored Jorge’s Fudgie Brownie, a rich, chocolatey treat paired with caramel bourbon sauce. The brownie was everything you would want—fudgy, dense, and indulgent—while the bourbon caramel sauce added a luxurious touch, making every bite a delightful blend of deep chocolate and smooth, caramel warmth.
Both desserts provided the fitting conclusion to our meal, each offering a unique yet equally satisfying end to a memorable dining experience at Madam Mikette’s
Personal Touches: Service and Ambiance
One thing that truly sets Madam Mikette’s apart from other restaurants in the city is the service. The moment we stepped in, we were treated with warmth and attentiveness. Our server was friendly, and knowledgeable, and offered great suggestions without being overbearing. The pace of the meal was also outstanding—there was no rush, allowing us to savor each dish and enjoy our conversation fully.
One of my favorite moments of the night was when the manager stopped by our table to check in and recommend a cocktail to pair with our meal. These thoughtful personal touches truly set Madam Mikette’s apart, ensuring I will return for another visit soon. The dining experience here was exceptional, and it is evident that the staff genuinely cares about ensuring you have a memorable time.
