The FIFA World Cup runs through the city for most of the month, with the final at MetLife on July 19. And underneath the milestone moments, the city falls into its truest summer rhythm. Fourth of July in NYC: America’s 250th Birthday

This is not a regular Fourth of July. America turns 250, and New York is marking it at full scale. The harbor fills with more than 50 tall ships from 30 nations for Sail4th 250, the largest international maritime event in American history. The Macy’s fireworks, celebrating their own 50th anniversary, launch simultaneously from three locations for the first time ever: the Brooklyn Bridge, the East River near the Seaport, and the Lower Hudson River. 85,000 shells. 25 minutes.

An estimated 8 million spectators along the shorelines. The tall ships remain in port July 5 through 8 for free public boarding. On July 6, a Homecoming of Heroes ticker-tape parade honors post-9/11 veterans and first responders through Lower Manhattan. Manhattanhenge: Full Sun & Half Sun

The year’s second and final Manhattanhenge falls on July 11 and 12. The Full Sun on Saturday places the entire solar disk precisely at the horizon between the buildings, resulting in a more dramatic photograph. The Half Sun on Sunday sets the sun right on the asphalt, creating the liquid-gold street effect many photographers prefer.

After July 12, Manhattanhenge does not return until the reverse sunrise version in late November. Three positions stand out. Tudor City Overpass at 42nd Street and 1st Avenue rewards an early arrival, by 5 PM at the latest. At 34th Street and Park Avenue, line up the Empire State Building as a secondary subject. At 23rd Street near Madison Square Park, the field opens wider, with the Flatiron catching the light. July 11 falls on a Saturday so the 42nd Street spot will be more crowded than the May weekday dates.
